Working in the school system as a program director and I was looking for a program that encompassed all of the elements my students were missing was non-existent. Therefore, I created HIS Agency to address character building, leadership development, soft-skills, life-skills, etiquette, money management, and entrepreneurship. Taking one bite at a time, we started with a mentoring program for a classroom of at-promise girls, which turned into an after-school program at several schools.
Dining for Success, a 2.5-hour dining tutorial popular with youth and adults offers an opportunity to meet life’s challenges with confidence by teaching proper dining etiquette. This workshop is popular with the youth serving organizations like Girl Scouts, Jack and Jill and schools and can be arranged as a mother daughter activity, school club activity or preparation for year-end dinner dance.
Students learn: Table Posture ~ How to Navigate the Place Setting ~ Silverware Savvy ~ Meal-time Manners ~ The Dining Experience ~ Proper use of a Napkin ~ Eating Various Foods ~ Styles of Eating ~ Being A Good Host/Guest ~ Tipping ~ Appropriate Mealtime Conversation ~ Dining Faux Pas ~ Do’s and Don’ts of a Business Meal ~ RSVP and so much more!
After years of hosting mentoring programs at over 15 middle and high schools, the need was so much greater to touch more lives. Hence, the You Are the Gift Conference was born and we touched 225 lives every year for eight years! This special, day-long event brought together girls ages 11-16 to explore and celebrate self-esteem and confidence.
Girls in this age group, especially in high-risk urban environments like Detroit, are at their most impressionable and insecure. You are the Gift is designed to address the many issues girls face in this age bracket and to offer solutions on how to rise above them. The jam-packed day inspired and taught self-worth, communication, relationships, financial stewardship, health and fitness, etiquette, peer pressure, and inner and outer beauty. Hands-on workshops and labs included self-defense, Zumba Fitness, a beauty zone with mini-manicures, mini- facials and more.
In an effort to further build the self-esteem of girls, and to add key tools to their life-skills toolkit, we introduced our first Sugar-licious Bake-off to offer a fun way to teach baking, while building the confidence of 25 contestants. Girls were invited to share and prepare their best dessert recipe’s, all being made from scratch hoping to win the “Sweet” title. This activity encouraged more girls to think about and pursue a career in hospitality, cooking and baking.
Always wanting to have greater impact with more students around their college and career goals, we expanded the conference to a one-week overnight camp. This camp exposes girls to all of the elements of the conference, but a more intense concentration on every aspect of a girls development. Health and wellness, inner beauty, outer beauty, life-skills to include cooking, crocheting, sewing, money management, etc.
